JSC “MARKET OPERATOR” PRESENTED ITS ANALYTICAL STUDY ON THE ROLE OF THE DAY-AHEAD MARKET FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS AT ENERGY STORAGE DAY 2026

29.04.2026

During the industry event Energy Storage Day 2026: New Architecture of the Ukrainian Power System, JSC “Market Operator” presented the results of its analytical study on the efficiency of energy storage systems (ESS) in the electricity market.

As a reminder, the study focuses on the operation of ESS in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), where the key strategy remains price arbitrage — purchasing electricity during periods of low prices and selling it during peak demand hours.

In particular, the following conclusions were presented to participants of the event:

  • the optimal market segment for ESS operation is the Day-Ahead Market, which provides the most predictable and economically efficient trading conditions;
  • the use of the Intraday Market (IDM) and balancing market is a suitable tool for operational adjustment of schedules in cases of non-acceptance of bids on the DAM;
  • an increase in installed storage capacity directly reduces the cost of operations, which in turn shortens the payback period of projects.

These findings are important for shaping a new market architecture, where energy storage systems will play an increasingly significant role in balancing the power system and enhancing its flexibility.
